Ryan Goins named Blue Jays starting 2B, Kawasaki among send downs

It has long been assumed and well known that Ryan Goins would be the Toronto Blue Jays starting second baseman to open the 2014 MLB season. Today, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons confirmed it according to reporters at the spring training facility.

Mike Wilner tweets:

The 25 year old, Ryan Goins took over the starting 2nd base position late last season when he was given a chance to start after being called up from AAA in August. Goins displayed a terrific glove on defense–which the Jays at been lacking all season at that particular position–including developing into a great double play combination alongside short stop Jose Reyes. While his bat is still in need of work–batting .252/.264/.345 with 2 HRs, 8 RBIs in his short 34 game major league stint (.257/.311/.369 in AAA last season)–Goins provides the Jays current best option in the system given his defensive ability.

The Blue Jays did sign a few infield options to compete with Goins in spring training for the 2nd base position, but those players have now been sent down to the minors–including Chris Getz, Steve Tolleson, and fan favourite Munenori Kawasaki.

Jose Reyes’ hamstring injury suffered on Saturday in the game against the Tigers may be more serious than first thought. As Reyes will be missing his second consecutive game today, and Mike Wilner reports that Reyes will be having an MRI today. If there is a potential DL stint on the way for the shortstop, Goins would move over to play SS, and one of the 3 infielders sent down would likely be called up to play 2nd or be the backup.

In addition to those sent down were outfielder Anthony Gose (with Moises Sierra winning the 4th outfielder spot on the 25 man roster), and Canadian catcher Mike Nickeas.

As spring training comes to an end, just 1 week before the regular season begins for the Blue Jays, most of the position battles have been determined with the exception of the 5th spot in the starting rotation–which continues to be a battle now narrowed down to 3 starters: J.A. Happ, Esmil Rogers, and Todd Redmond.
