The Toronto Maple Leafs head to St. Louis to take on the 20-6-3 St. Louis Blues following Wednesday night’s loss to the L.A. Kings. The Leafs and Blues square off on LeafsTV since a majority of Leafs fans clearly don’t want to watch their team play on of the Western Conferences best teams following what was probably the Leafs best effort of the season last night despite the loss.
The Leafs managed to out-Corsi one of the league’s best Corsi team’s on their way to a 3-1 loss. The Leafs were foiled by shoddy goaltending from Jonathan Bernier, a continually faltering penalty kill, and outstanding goaltending from the opposition, essentially the complete opposite of how they’ve managed to win this season.
Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner were given extended minutes as defensive partners, and did not disappoint. The Leafs clearly drove play when the pair was on the ice together at 5 on 5 despite being matched up against Drew Doughty and the Mike Richards line for much of the evening.
The Leafs will be looking to scrape up any points possible as they enter the toughest stretch of the season. After wasting a fantastic effort last night, the team cannot afford to let games start slipping away given the gauntlet that awaits in the near future.
The Leafs go back to their getting dominated ways playing the back-end of a double-header on the road managing to get 2 points in the process feeding more fuel to the anti-Corsi crowd. 3-1 Leafs.
