Tower Talk: October 10, 2013

Maple Leafs

Randy Carlyle is doing his best job to ruin Nazem Kadri like he did with Mikhail Grabovski by burying him down the line up. He received just 13 minutes of ice time, mostly with Colton Orr and Carter Ashton on Tuesday night, while all around awful Tyler Bozak pulled in over 23. Ugh. [Toronto Star]

Joffrey Lupul missed practice yesterday, and the Maple Leafs shuffled their deck of minor league fill ins, calling up Marlie forwards David Broll and Leivo, and defenceman T.J. Brennan, while forwards Trevor Smith and Jamie Devane were returned to the AHL club. [Toronto Star]

The Leafs played what I thought was their best game of the season on Tuesday night despite taking the loss at the hands of the Avalanche, so obviously it’s time to overreact and start talking about how the Leafs need to get back to the “hard-hitting, gloves-dropping, grinding team” that made the playoffs last season. I don’t think Damien Cox has the capacity to understand the difference between correlation and causation this may never have come to be. [Toronto Star]

Buffalo Bills

E.J. Manuel’s injury is a definite hindrance to his development as an NFL quarterback, but is Thad Lewis that much of a downgrade in immediate production for the Bills? [ESPN]

Jairus Byrd will make his season debut this week, which will definitely be a help for the hobbled Bills secondary, but will his welcome be a warm one? [Rocherter Democrat & Chronicle]

The Bills may have a chance to head across the pond to play visitors in one of the NFL’s overseas games next season, which would be cool for the franchise while not sacrificing (another) home game. []

The Raptors lost their home preseason debut 101-89 to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Demar Derozan led the way for the Raptors with 17 points, which included a highlight reel alley-oop from Rudy Gay early in the third quarter. [Globe & Mail]

Jonas Valanciunas bulked up in the offseason, and was able to put that to the test against NBA big men in the preseason loss. [National Post]

The best mascot in all of sports is going to be out for the season after THE Raptor blew out his achilles while the team was in Halifax. Terrible news for Raptors fans that are likely going to have to deal with a rough season on the court, and will no longer have hilarious antics to distract them throughout the games. [Sports Illustrated]

Blue Jays

Arizona Fall League is in full swing, and if you don’t want to hear about the Red Sox marching through the playoffs it’s a great way to distract yourself while getting a baseball fix. [Jays Journal]

No offense to my FanSided brethren but the chance of Brett Cecil starting a game for the Toronto Blue Jays next season (barring catastrophic injuries to like 10 starters) is essentially 0.0% [FanSided]

Carlos Ruiz would be a nice upgrade behind the plate for the Blue Jays, but so would just about anyone really, it’s all about the dollars and I’m not sure Ruiz fits into the plans. [Vancouver Sun]
