ESPN NFL Week 4 Power Rankings: Bills Rise to #24

Uhhhh say what?

After a brutal Week 3 loss to the New York Jets, most were down on the Buffalo Bills and their prospects this season. Despite looking completely and utterly awful, the Bills actually managed to rise 2 spots in this week’s ESPN Power Rankings. How so you ask? Well it certainly doesn’t hurt how bad so many other teams managed to look in Week 3 along with the Bills

Even at 1-1 with their only loss coming to a superior Patriots team, the Bills were ranked behind several win-less teams that the experts felt were much better than they had shown (i.e. Washington, Pittsburgh and the NY Giants) last week. After another week of dismal performances by these teams to drop them all to 0-3, their performances finally outweighed their name, and the higher rankings could no longer be justified.

In a somewhat perplexing case the Carolina Panthers managed to jump 6 spots, leapfrogging the Bills despite the identical records and head-to-head loss after their evisceration of the hapless NY Giants. I guess beating a terrible team means that you’re better than the team that beat you the week previously in these experts eyes.

The Bills face the 11th ranked Baltimore Ravens this week. While many are quick to remember the Peyton Manning show to open the season against Baltimore, since giving up those 7 TD passes, the Ravens are just one of three defenses to not allow a passing touchdown in the past two weeks. It should be a tough test for the Bills, and a win could re-establish them as a dark horse wildcard candidate in the AFC.

What do you think of the Bills ranking? Under, properly, or over rated? Let us know in the comments section where you think they should be.
