Joffrey Lupul makes his preseason debut as the Toronto Maple Leafs face the Buffalo Sabres for the second time in as many nights in preseason action. After facing off in Buffalo last night the teams reconvene at the Air Canada Centre tonight for their last meeting until November.
The two teams met in what was a lacklustre affair, that is until the shootout. A shootout in an NHL game is considered to be a bit of a sideshow by some; while a shootout in an NHL preseason game most definitely is a sideshow. Last night’s penalty shot competition was an exercise in futility (at least from a shooter’s stand point), as there wasn’t a single goal until the 15th round, when Jay McClement was the 30th and final shooter burying the winning goal 5-hole.
With 50% of the preseason schedule officially in the books, we’re officially in the dog days of preseason. Ever closer to that first game of real, meaningful hockey, but still a painful amount of painfully poor hockey to watch before it comes. On a positive note, veteran NHLers are now creeping into the preseason line ups with more frequency, increasing the talent level and decreasing the amount of stupid numbers on the ice at a given time.
