Former Maple Leaf, and eternal crazy person Mikhail Grabovski is officially a Washington Capital. Grabovski who has been an unrestricted free agent since the Leafs cut ties with him during the compliance buy out period had reportedly been looking for a long-term deal, but was forced to compromise, signing with the Capitals for one-year, $3-million.
Grabovski struggled last season in a lockout shortened season scoring just 9 goals and 7 assists. Grabovksi was in and out of head coach Randy Carlyle‘s dog house, playing much of the season in a limited and defensive role, compounding his offensive struggles.
The talented, if enigmatic Belarusian seems to be a perfect fit for a high-flying Capitals team that just let Mike Ribeiro walk in free agency. Given the choice between a 33-year old Ribeiro on a 4-year deal, and a 29-year old Grabovski (who now has a chip on his shoulder) on a 1-year deal, I think the Capitals made the right choice.
Capitals fans can expect a 20-goal, 50-point season from Grabovski, with approximately 19 of those goals and 45 of those points coming against the Leafs (the other goal and 4 assists probably coming against the Habs…he hates those guys too).
